11 of the most dramatic teammate clashes in Formula E history

In motorsport, there is one universal rule for drivers when they step into their race car: do not crash into your teammate.

Porsche teammates Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa ran into trouble during FP1 at the 2025 Berlin E-Prix.

We all know motorsport's golden rule is 'don't hit your teammate'. However, when navigating tight street circuits or trying to maintain your energy management, incidents can happen. Across 12 seasons and three generations of car, Formula E has seen its fair share of teammate tussles.

Here is a look back at the most dramatic, awkward, and expensive moments when Formula E teammates forgot the first rule of racing and collided with one another.

Taken out of the lead

Having won the 2018/19 season opener in Diriyah, Antonio Felix da Costa arrived in Marrakesh and continued to look competitive. After passing for the lead early on, the Portuguese racer soon found his BMW i Andretti Motorsport teammate Alexander Sims fighting him for first place.

In the race's closing stages, Sims made a move around the outside for first place but both drivers locked up and made contact, sending da Costa straight into the barriers and out of the race. Sims was able to continue and would go on to finish the race in fourth, but there's no denying the mistake cost the team a guaranteed one-two result.

World Championship hopes over

During the 2022/23 season finale, Envision Racing teammates Nick Cassidy and Sebastien Buemi made contact in London after a ‘misunderstanding’ between the two ruined Cassidy's title hopes.

After starting from pole position, Cassidy dropped back behind Buemi after his second ATTACK MODE and hoped his teammate would make it easy to pass for position. But, after defensive driving from Buemi, a tight circuit layout and Cassidy desperate to pass, a small tap resulted in a big outcome.

Cassidy’s wing touched the rear of Buemi’s car, came loose and wedged under his Envision which dropped him to the back of the field - a heartbreaking end to his championship hopes.

Porsche tensions in Practice

During the end of Free Practice 1 for the 2025 Berlin E-Prix, Porsche teammates Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa had an unusual incident where they clipped one another on their final practice laps.

Wehrlein was given a three-place grid drop for the contact, after da Costa was tapped from behind and consequently sent into the concrete barriers. Both drivers were unhurt, but many speculated it was the beginning of the end for the two, who had allegedly already fallen out.

Hit in Hyderabad

After starting on pole position for the inaugural Hyderabad E-Prix in 2023, Mitch Evans was ready to convert his stellar qualifying performance into victory. At just under half distance, Evans was running in third but his race was truly ruined by his Jaguar TCS Racing teammate Sam Bird, who approached the circuit’s hairpin too quickly and ploughed into the side of Evans.

Both were sent into a spin, partially blocking the ATTACK MODE activation loops, and Bird was handed a grid drop and penalty points by the FIA for the following race. A disaster for the usually so polished Jaguar squad!

First lap mess for Mahindra

During the 2025 São Paulo E-Prix, Nyck de Vries had a poor start from fifth and on entry to the first corner the Mahindra Racing driver tapped both Dan Ticktum of CUPRA KIRO and his teammate Edoardo Mortara.

The incident pushed Mortara off the track, and resulted in him and de Vries having to take to the escape road. With the field streaming past and limited room to safely spin around, both drivers had to wait out the bottleneck before re-joining dead last at the rear of the pack, torpedoing Mahindra’s qualifying gains within seconds of the lights going out.

Formula E’s first team 1-2 result

The 2018 Santiago E-Prix saw the first-ever one-two result for a team in Formula E history, but the Techeetah line-up of Jean-Eric Vergne and Andre Lotterer almost didn’t let that happen.

Running nose-to-tail, Lotterer suffered a heavy front lockup under braking, careening straight into the rear of race leader Vergne in a heart-in-mouth moment. The teammates banged wheels on two further occasions, yet despite the self-inflicted damage, both machines made ot across the line - culminating in an emotional embrace on the podium as the duo celebrated a historic milestone 1-2 finish.

A bump in the road

During the 2021 Rome E-Prix double-header, Stoffel Vandoorne placed his Mercedes-EQ on pole but early contact in the race by the Porsche of Andre Lotterer sent the Belgian tumbling down the order.

Having recovered well from the incident to end up fifth, Vandoorne hit a manhole cover whilst avoiding the Audi of Lucas di Grassi, who had suffered a mechanical failure and spun into a nearby wall. Unfortunately for Vandoorne, his then-teammate Nyck de Vries was right behind and ploughed into the side of him, taking them both out of the race in one of the most dramatic moments of the 2021/22 season.

Mahindra’s stadium shunt

Both Mahindra Racing drivers had an unfortunate case of ‘wrong place, wrong time’ during the 2017 Mexico City E-Prix. Renault’s Nicolas Prost and Mahindra's Nick Heidfeld came together in the iconic Foro Sol stadium section, where Heidfeld was sent into a spin from their impact and straight into the path of an innocent Felix Rosenqvist.

Rosenqvist – who won the prestigious Indy500 earlier this year – had nowhere to go, and the two teammates collided. The Mahindra duo went from both being in the points to Rosenqvist being forced to retire with two laps to go and Heidfeld eventually finishing 12th.

Twice in a single season

For the second time in the 2022/23 season, Sam Bird made contact with his Jaguar teammate Mitch Evans – this time at the 2023 Jakarta E-Prix. The two drivers were running in eighth and ninth, with three laps remaining of the Indonesian event, when Bird misjudged his braking into Turn 1 and subsequently hit the rear of Evans’ car whilst running with ATTACK MODE.

Evans was wiped into the barriers and was forced to retire on the spot. Bird limped through the wreckage to cross the line in 21st, but the blunder lost crucial points for Jaguar TCS Racing. Beyond the pit wall fury, it proved a devastating blow to Evans’ World Championship campaign, while a crestfallen Bird was left facing intense scrutiny.

Problems in Paris

Things got off to an exciting start when the DS Virgin duo of Jean-Eric Vergne and Sam Bird made contact at Turn 2 on the opening lap of the 2016 Paris E-Prix. Polesitter Bird didn’t get the best start, with Vergne trying to pass for the lead at his home race, resulting in a slight tap between the two.

Later on in the race, Bird tried to get the position back. However, Vergne wouldn't let a podium at his home race slip from his grasp, and the two made contact again at Turns 3 and 4. The incident caused damage to Vergne’s sidepod and Bird’s front wing, with Frenchman Vergne eventually reaching the chequered flag in second. Despite Vergne's jubilation at a podium in Paris, the result did little to ease tensions between the two teammates.

Making contact in Monaco

Last season Porsche teammates Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller clashed during the opening race of the 2026 Monaco E-Prix double-header. Despite both launching cleanly from inside the top six, their afternoons unraveled on Lap 13 when Müller rear-ended his teammate in midfield traffic.

The contact forced Wehrlein into the pits for an unscheduled tyre change, dropping him to the rear of the field where he ultimately crossed the line in last place, one lap down.
